TikTok Music could mean competition for Apple Music and Spotify

TikTok Music could be the latest competitor to Apple Music and Spotify, as TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has just filed a trademark application for its possible music streaming service in the United States.

First spotted by Business Internthis could mean that the social media giant could be preparing to compete with Apple Music and Spotify in the near future.

As mentioned by the publication, TikTok is already a hub for discovering new music. Besides, it helps turn songs into mainstream and top charts like Billboard 100, Spotify Viral 50, and curated playlists by Apple Music.

The TikTok Music trademark was registered in the United States in May. It could be used for “a variety of goods and services, including a mobile app that would allow users to buy, play, share, download music, songs, albums, lyrics.”

Other possible use cases for “TikTok Music” in ByteDance’s app include an app that would allow users to “stream live audio and video” as well as the ability to “edit and upload photos as cover of playlists” and “comment on music, songs and albums.

If that turns out to be the case, Apple Music and Spotify would have some serious competition. TikTok, for example, is the only non-Facebook app to top 3 billion downloads worldwide and, again, is a huge boost for artists to discover.

“As a rule, a company the size of TikTok or ByteDance will only file trademark applications for items it is seriously considering,” trademark attorney Josh Gerben of the law firm Gerben told Insider. “If you look back through the trademark filings of any large company, you’ll see the ones they filed that never materialized. But often they do. And often it’s something they’re seriously working on.
