Sep 8 (Reuters) – Russians will be able to buy Apple’s new iPhone 14 despite the U.S. tech company leaving the country, thanks to an alternative import system set up by Moscow, a minister has said to the RIA Novosti news agency on Thursday.

In response to Western sanctions, Russia in March allowed retailers to import products from abroad without the permission of the brand owner.

Asked whether the new iPhone, unveiled by Apple on Wednesday, would be imported in this way, Trade and Industry Minister Denis Manturov replied: “Why not? If consumers want to buy these phones, yes . They will have the opportunity.”

Apple halted sales of new products in Russia in March, a week after the Russian military invaded Ukraine, but its products remained available in Russian stores as retailers sold off their stock of older models and acquiring new devices through the import program.

Thursday morning, the Russian mobile network MTS was already selling the new iPhone 14 models for pre-order, with a starting price of 84,990 rubles (1,396.24 euros) for the 128 GB version.

MTS said delivery could take up to 120 days and it reserves the right to cancel orders if it has difficulty importing the products.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. (Reuters report; French version Alizée Degorce, editing by Tangi Salaün)
