A few days after the Apple Watch Series 8 reached customers, Netcost-security.fr reader Jason Smith saw the value of his health features firsthand. Medical officials credit Jason’s Apple Watch Series 8 with detecting an unseen heart condition in his mother that could have been fatal if not discovered early.
No suspicion of atrial fibrillation
“My parents were going away for the weekend to Chester (UK) when I received a call from my father to tell me that mum was not feeling well at all”, says Jason. “He said she felt very dizzy and like her heart was racing – I told them to stop and that I would be with them as soon as possible. »
When Jason joined his parents, everything seemed under control despite the episode.
“When I arrived, I took his blood pressure and assessed his general condition, which was relatively normal considering what had happened,” says Jason. Her mother told her that she felt much better and that she shouldn’t worry.
Apple Watch ECG
Then Jason wisely thought about using his new Apple Watch Series 8 right now.
With the exception of Apple’s SE models, Apple Watch Series 4 and later have a built-in electrocardiogram that allows users to measure the timing and strength of electrical signals that cause the heart to beat. This can be crucial in identifying AFib, or atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat that can be fatal when left undetected.
“I then took my Apple Watch Series 8 and placed it on his wrist to perform an ECG. That’s when the Watch alerted us to say they had detected atrial fibrillation and to seek medical assistance immediately,” continues Jason. “I did three more ECGs to rule out any false positives, but each reported atrial fibrillation with a resting heart rate over 160 bpm. »
Convinced by the watch, Jason and his parents drove to the nearest emergency room where medical authorities confirmed that his mother had atrial fibrillation. It was there that his mother learned that immediate treatment was needed.
What could have been a life-changing weekend was averted thanks to the Apple Watch. Jason says his mom is back on track after the watch detected her heart issue.
“I’m happy to report that after a stay in the hospital and a number of different prescribed medications that she has to take for the rest of her life, she’s doing great,” Jason tells us. “NHS specialists caring for her said that without the Apple Watch there is a good chance she would not have survived the rest of the day. »
Jason tells us it’s safe to say his mom will get her own Apple Watch after what he did for her. We are all happy to hear that Jason’s mother is happy and healthy thanks to what the Apple Watch has made accessible to so many people.
