The tears shed by Meghan Markle at the funeral of the Queen of England obviously did not move her detractors. Strongly criticized by a royal biographer who has regularly attacked her, the Duchess of Sussex has received massive support from Internet users, who denounce harassment similar to that experienced by Lady Di 25 years ago.

There have always been many comparisons between Lady Di and Meghan Markle. However, the two women do not have much in common, except that they found themselves in the heart of the British royal family without really having planned it, as well as the love without measure that they brought to Prince Harry. And yet, supporters of the Duchess of Sussex point to similar treatment between the latter, and that which Diana Spencer had suffered after her divorce from Prince Charles.

Meghan Markle’s “Crocodile Tears”

Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022 and England has just emerged from its long period of mourning in tribute to the sovereign. The ceremonies followed one another for 12 days to end this Monday, September 19 with the funeral and burial of the Queen: moments heavy with emotion for all the members of the British royal family, from George and Charlotte, present for the occasion, to Meghan Markle, who nevertheless had the reputation of not being very close to Her Majesty.

It must be said that since the infamous “Megxit”, Prince Harry and his wife have distanced themselves from the royal family: they are no longer considered active members of the monarchy, and many rumors claim that they were even in conflict with the rest of their relatives. Yet Harry has always been very close to his grandmother, to whom he paid a moving tribute. And during the funeral, Meghan Markle wiped her tears several times, under the watchful eye of photographers.

But for royal biographer Tom Bower, interviewed by GB News, it was not out of sadness that the Duchess of Sussex shed tears during the ceremony. “She was crying over her own fate,” he says, referring to crocodile tears and a woman more likely to feel sorry for herself than for the death of her husband’s grandmother.

Meghan Markle, “good actress” according to Stéphane Bern

In very harsh remarks, the man claims “Was she emotional? I mean, did she really wipe away a tear or was it a Hollywood actress trick to make it look like she was crying If she was crying at that moment, I think it was for her own fate, and not for the Queen.” His opinion is visibly shared by Stéphane Bern, who told Madame Figaro: “We retain the emotion of Meghan Markle, all the same, and her little tear. Now, perhaps she is also a very good actress.”

In short, there are many voices questioning the sincerity of Meghan Markle, which is far from surprising, given the treatment to which she has been entitled in recent years. The question now is: why should the Duchess of Sussex feel sorry for herself? She and her husband made the conscious choice to step away from the royal family, despite the criticism. A choice that seems to allow them to flourish far from the British tabloids, since they appeared more accomplices than ever during the ceremonies in tribute to the queen, determined to support each other at all costs.

Meghan’s supporters denounce a form of harassment

Critics of the royal family reacted very quickly to these new criticisms of Meghan Markle, recalling that the latter had been targeted from the start of her relationship with Prince Harry. Criticized for her status as a divorced woman and a commoner, for her African-American origins, for her feminism or for her lack of respect for protocol, Prince Harry’s wife is always singled out as the villain, the one who has alienated the young prince from his title and his family.

Result: several people came to her defence, starting with Baroness Meral Hussein Ece, a British Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords who did not hesitate to affirm: “Princess Diana was slandered and harassed until her dead, reflecting exactly what is happening to Meghan Markle now. This despicable abuse must stop.” An opinion shared by Nazir Afzal, chief prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service for the North West of England, who believes that “Tom Bowers could have taken a ‘moment of silent reflection’ instead of continuing to harass Meghan and Harry.”

Meghan Markle and Lady Di, more similar than you think?

Inevitably, this harassment situation has created a new point of comparison between the Duchess of Sussex and the mother-in-law she has never known. Prince Harry has always been very honest about the reasons that led him to leave the British royal family and England: his mental health no longer supported the pressure of the tabloids, which he considers responsible for the death of his mother , Diana Spencer. “You all know how the British press can be,” he told James Corden on his “Late Late Show”. “It was destroying my sanity, it was toxic. So I did everything any husband and father would do.”

His only will was to protect his wife and their children, Archie and Lilibet, terrified that they could suffer the same tragic fate as his own mother. Moreover, as soon as the official mourning for Queen Elizabeth II and the funeral is over, Prince Harry and his wife have already left Great Britain, heading for the United States. Separated for two weeks from their children, they now have only one hurry: to find them as soon as possible.
