Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini says pineapple has absolutely no place on pizza and adds that he gets sick when he sees someone using pineapple as a pizza topping.
The Miami Open asked several ATP and WTA players if pineapple belonged on pizza. Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, had the best response. “Oh my God, look at my heart!
He is hurting me. No,” Berrettini said.
Cori Gauff, who reached her first Grand Slam final at French Open, has revealed she didn’t really like the idea of putting pineapple on pizza, but her views have changed.
“I was against pineapple on pizza, and then, yes, now I think it has its place,” Gauff revealed.
Berrettini has struggled this summer on the hard courts.
Along with Novak Djokovic, Berrettini was considered the hot favorite for the Wimbledon title.
Then, on the day of his first-round match, Berrettini tested positive for COVID-19. Being forced to withdraw from Wimbledon hurt Berrettini greatly and he made no secret of his disappointment in an Instagram post he sent that day.
Berrettini has since played in two tournaments – losing in the first round each time. After suffering a surprise first-round loss to Pablo Carreno Busta in Montreal, Berrettini picked up another surprise loss last week when he lost to Frances Tiafoe in the first round in Cincinnati.
After the match, Tiafoe said beating a quality player like Berrettini was something he needed. “I really needed this. I know it’s a first round game.
But everyone knew why I needed it against a quality player, so it was important. I know I’ve beaten a lot of those guys, but that hasn’t happened lately.
This is one of the things you have to do to overcome the obstacle. But I’m happy to have another chance to play again,” Tiafoe said. It remains to be seen how Berrettini will fare at the US Open.
