Apple completes this year its integration of the Dark Sky weather app, purchased more than two years ago. The company has created its own weather service based on the data and models of the start-up and it is this one that is used for the predictions of the Weather app in iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. This service can also be used by third-party developers, thanks to a new API called WeatherKit.
Since the data essential to any meteorological service is not free, this API will be chargeable, even if the developers in the ecosystem benefit from a free offer which may be sufficient for the most modest needs. Like what Apple did with CloudKit and MapKit, this API should be quite well placed against its competitors.
