Apple Wallet may be removed after iPadOS 16.1 beta released last night

As you probably know, Apple released the first beta of iPadOS 16.1 last night, the Californian giant seems to want to get ahead of its future software releases. In this new update, a surprising detail has been detected, it concerns the preinstalled “Apple Wallet” application!

Apple Wallet may be removed

By analyzing the code of the iPadOS 16.1 update, the 9to5mac site made a discovery quite unexpected. While Apple Wallet is a pre-installed app that has never been able to be removed since its inception, it looks like Apple will soon offer users the option to exclude this app from their iPhone’s storage.

Indeed, we find in the code of iPadOS 16.1, four lines that say it all:

“To continue, download “Wallet” from the App Store.

“Download “Wallet”?”

“Show in App Store”

As you can see from the codes above, Apple will send various warnings when the user will enter a procedure to delete the Apple Wallet application. The Californian giant specifies that the application can be removed, but that it can be re-uploaded directly from the App Store if the user later changes their mind.

Of course, making the decision to remove Apple Wallet is suspend immediately any use of Apple Pay, loyalty cards, transport cards… In addition, it will still not be possible to go through a third-party application in iOS 16.

It is likely that Apple offers the option to remove the Apple Wallet application to obtain a best defense in a class action that accuses the Californian giant of violating antitrust law by placing Apple Wallet as its sole mobile wallet. From iOS 16.1, the Cupertino company will be able to say: “If users don’t want it, they don’t have to keep the Apple Wallet app, they can delete it!”
