News hardware Apple is imitating Samsung and that’s good news for iPhone owners
A few weeks ago, Samsung updated one of its smartphones released several years ago to give it a useful optimization for its users. It is now up to Apple to do the same with older iPhone models.
Despite the plethora of new smartphones hitting the market every month, millions of mobile users are looking to keep their mobile phone as long as possible. It must be said that smartphones are often very expensive and even when we are talking about mid-range models, you always have to pay several hundred euros to acquire them.
Some consumers thus choose to use their smartphone for many years, even beyond the update period. Sometimes a little surprise happens : this was the case in mid-August for owners of a Samsung Galaxy Note 8, who were surprised to receive an upgrade on their device. A small update aimed at improving the quality of Wi-Fi, 5 years after the arrival of the terminal on the market.
Apple updates old iPhones
This time, it’s Apple’s turn to do the same. The Cupertino company is known to deploy updates to its iPhones for many years, but when a device is deemed obsolete, this proposal stops. Owners of an iPhone 5s, an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, an iPad Air or even an iPad Mini 2 or 3 and even a 6th generation iPad touch no longer benefit from upgrades since one moment : these are devices that have remained stuck at iOS 12. As a reminder, iOS 16 is about to land on more recent Apple devices.
Concretely, if these devices do not benefit from the new features of the latest versions of iOS, they still benefited from security updates until September 2021. Since then, nothing. But at the very end of August, owners of one of these models could see that Apple had not completely forgotten about them.
iOS 12.5.6 arrives without warning
As noted by The Verge website, Apple rolled out a new iOS 12 update on August 31.. On the program of this version 12.5.6, a security patch intended to close a loophole allowing a hacker to execute unwanted code through a web page. “Apple is aware that this flaw is being actively exploited”can we read on the brand’s official website. This explains why the company decided to take care of the problem.
If you have one of the devices compatible with this update, you may have already received a push notification inviting you to install it. If this is not yet the case, you can force the update via the menu Settings > General > Software update.
Certainly, this small upgrade will not allow you to enjoy new features on your Apple devicebut it still protects you from a malicious attempt to take control of the terminal, which is always good to take.
