Apple confirms that the update will be released well after iOS 16

Apple has confirmed that version 16 of iPadOS will not be released at the same time as iOS 16. A delay which is explained by the many new features planned.

While we expect updates to Apple’s main operating systems next month — iOS16, watchOS 9, macOS Ventura — we learned from journalist Mark Gurman on August 9 that Apple would have fallen behind for the development of iPad OS. Version 16 of the operating system for Apple’s tablets would not be released until a month later, in October 2022.

Apple ended up confirming this information with the American site TechCrunch:

This is a particularly important year for iPadOS. As a platform independent with features designed specifically for iPad, we have the flexibility to release iPadOS on its own schedule. This fall, iPadOS will be released after iOS, in version 16.1 in a free update.

So it looks like iPadOS doesn’t even go through the classic version 16 box, but straight from iPadOS 15 to iPadOS 16.1. An update which should therefore be deployed simultaneously with version 16.1 of iOS. As a reminder, in 2021, Apple launched the first update to iOS 15 – iOS 15.1 – at the end of October, a month after the deployment of iOS 15 for all users. It is therefore probably during this period that the iPads will take the plunge this year, going directly from iPadOS 15 to iPadOS 16.1 at the end of October.

However, Apple has not given a precise explanation to justify this delay in the deployment of iPadOS 16. Nevertheless, since the presentation of the operating system last June, during WWDC, the update has been made available. from testers and beta developers. Enough to try out the main new feature of the system, namely Stage Manager, a new management of multitasking with applications open in windows that can be resized. It is possibly on this new feature that Apple still needs to refine things. Several testers report some display problems, especially when using Stage Manager with a secondary screen.

This Tuesday, Apple finally began rolling out iPadOS version 16.1 in beta. An update which precisely improves the management of the Stage Manager with the possibility of displaying the sidebar of this new function with a simple slide of the finger.
