How to Create a Surreal Landscape using Photoshop
A very useful tutorial were we will go trough a various selection of tools. We will create a beautiful landscape that attracts the eyes. The methods that we use in this guide can be used in several of your Photoshop project, myself I use them almost every day. It is so simple that it almost is not true, just from a few pictures and adjustment layers we can create a Surreal images such as this.
What We’re Making
Before we get started, let’s take a look at the surreal scene we’ll be creating.
Materials Needed
This is the material we are using in the tutorial.
- Paddle Boats 1 – scx.hu
- kodaikanal hills – scx.hu
Step 1
In this very first step we´re just going to bring in Paddle Boats 1 to photoshop. Make the layer loose, Right-Click then choose Layer From Background, name the new layer “Ground Layer”.
Step 2
One thing that took a very long time for me to know was how to size up the document without resizing the images. So let´s add some space at the canvas sides. Image > Canvas Size, set width to about 4000px.
Step 3
We want to get rid of that dock with paddle boats, because this is going to be a bit more landscape structured project. Create a new layer, name it “Dock Remover”. Select the Clone Stamp Tool (S), set the Aligned Sample to All Layers. When we choose this option it will clone from all layers on this new layer (or the layer that you have selected). Press alt+click on the area that you want to clone. Choose different sizes of the brush and change the opacity back and forth. Paint over the Dock so it wont be visable.
Step 4
The side are a bit to transparent. Use the same technique, create a new layer name it “Sides” and start cloning over the transparent sides. You can leave the upper right corner empty because we´re adding an image there later.
Step 5
The mountains on the left side is a bit small and boring, we are creating a new mountain. Download kodaikanal hills from sxc, open it in Photoshop, name it “Mountains”. Place it like in the image below. Go Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All, this will create a layer mask so that we can erase parts that we want out. Select the Brush Tool (B), start painting on the layer mask with black as foregroundcolor.

Step 6
Now to the final touches. The whole picture should or will be more realistic if you have same colors everywhere. Create a new adjustment layer Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map. Choose a gradient from #0070C6 to #26A3FF. Set blend mode to Soft Light and the opacity to 50%.
Step 7
Let´s also add curves to make it more dramatic. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves. Try to set the points similar to the image below.
Conclusion
That is the final creation, we are finished. We have used many useful tools like the clone stamp, we have used layer masks + a lot more. Thanks for reading!
