Mike Speero Interview
A few days ago we saw this photoshop tutorial, Flashing Design in Photoshop by Mike Speero, pop up over at Abduzeedo.com. We were very inspired and wanted to find out more about Mike Sperro that we still do not know the correct name of. Mike Speero are specializing in graphic design and creative illustrations. We do not know his name but we know that he lives in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Welcome to Wordrom, please introduce yourself. Give us a little background bio about yourself, tell us where you’re from.
Hey!
My name is not Mike Speero, as most of you know. I took that name long ago, because it’s rememberable and works internationally. Many people use nicknames, NoPattern, Signalnoise, Nufabric etc. I’m quite unique with choosing a name though. And it has it’s backsides sometimes. When someone calls and asks for Mike, then I got some explaining to do haha.
I was born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden. Still live there today. 24 years old.
My journey with graphics started 2005 in August. At that time the school had ended and I couldn’t get a job. So I sat in front of the computer searching for something that could occupy my time.
Recently got accepted to an ad/marketing school called Reklam Akdemien. The goal is to become an CAD (Creative Art Director). So in April next year I’m off for my internship somewhere.
I’m also a member of the amazing KDU collective. First swede to be accepted, so it was a good milestone for me.

Your work is pretty unique and full of creativity. Where does your inspiration come from?
Everywhere. I like to glimpse at things, so I can barely remember them. Then I just let the brain work and hopefully it has done a good job mixing everything
I’ve seen into something special.

Could you tell us about your process? What does your workflow look like?
Depends on what type of project it is. Mostly I’m just experimenting around and get lucky. My visions are often pretty vague and I have to add things along the way. If I could sketch, I would probably do that first.

What do you consider your major influences to be? What are your favorite sources of inspiration? Do you find yourself browsing any online design communitIes or websites?
Tim Burton. No doubt. It doesn’t show in my pictures, but it’s his imaginative creations and visions that inspire me.

Do you work in a office? What does your workstation look like? What tools and applications do you mainly use?
I work at home and in school. My workstation at home has a wide desk with my lovely iMac 24″ and Mac Book Pro 15″ on it. Some design books and magazines, a lamp, wacom, a green plastic ball, beetlejuice bobble-head and a HDD.
Mostly I use Photoshop and Illustrator. Well that’s pretty much it in fact.

Are you a 9-5 worker or a night-owl? Do you have a normal or peculiar structure to your workday? How does a typical day looks like for you?
I’m not a night-owl that’s for sure! I have summer break now, so my daily routines are a bit different. But I like to go up at 9 anyways. Hit the gym so I’m home at 12. Then I do my daily Internet surfing and cleaning. Love to clean! Except for the dishes. If I have an idea, then I do that. Try to eat at 4 so I have the rest of the day to be with friends, work some more or watching all those TV-Series that I’m following. Go to sleep around 12. When I’m in school, everything looks the same but it’s school from 9-4 instead.

What’s been your most challenging project so far in your career? What was challenging about it? And how did you overcome those challenges?
Everything has gone pretty good so far when it comes to the projects bit. But the most challenging thing in my career, must have been for about 2-3 years ago. I got denied to Hyper Island, a graphic school in Sweden. All my friends got in, except for me. My future didn’t look that good. I had no job and no money. Living at home in a closet almost. Then a company in California called me and offered me a job. After 1 month of preparing I got denied again, but this time for the Visa into the states. So I had to crawl back to my old job as an warehouse worker and work for a year until the school applications opened again. And guess what. Got denied again by Hyper Island. And my friends got in. That’s though. But it made me stronger. I fought it through and now the future looks very bright.
So don’t ever give up if you feel like you don’t getting anywhere.

Which is your favorite piece of work that you have created so far and why? What was the inspiration and idea behind it?
I don’t like anything I do. Maybe 5 minutes after I’m done, but then I hate it. My tutorial were very exhausting to do, so I’m impressed that I did it. If it counts?

What kind of developments do you see in the future, regarding the type of work you do?
You must be multi-talented. Know a lot of programs or be extremely good at one thing.

Thanks again for providing Wordrom with this opportunity to interview you. Any final thoughts for our readers?
No, Thank you Vincent!
Like I said before. Never give up. That’s been my struggling story, so that’s the best advice that I can give.

Where can we find you in the cyberspace?
My Website, Twitter, Behance and Flickr.
